Mission Connection Flags Disorganized Thinking in New Mental Health Resource

Sep 16, 2026

Mission Connection releases a resource on disorganized thinking, covering signs, causes across conditions like schizophrenia and depression together with proven outpatient treatment options, from CBT to medication management.

-- Mission Connection has published a new resource examining disorganized thinking, a symptom now linked to several serious mental health conditions. Often misunderstood in nature, the document warns that a problematic thinking process shouldn’t be ignored - particularly as roughly 1 in 5 US adults were found to suffer from some form of mental illness just within the last year.

The release comes as Mission Connection points to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, among other modalities, as a legitimate path for helping sufferers recognize and challenge disordered thought patterns. Ashley Pena, Mission Connection’s National VP of Outpatient Operations, notes that such therapies notably use reality testing to evaluate the accuracy of thoughts and beliefs before replacing distorted thinking with more accurate perspectives.

“Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) helps to identify and challenge disordered thought patterns while also building skills for reality testing and organizing ideas,” explains Pena. “Family therapy also plays an important role, helping loved ones understand disorganized thinking and learn effective communication strategies. These sessions allow families to practice supportive responses and develop household routines that provide the structure and predictability that often help reduce thought disorganization.”

Disorganized thinking refers to a breakdown in the coherence and logical flow of a person's thoughts, says Mission Connection. Tangential speech, jumbled phrases (word salad), rapid shifts between unrelated ideas, or sudden pauses where thoughts seem to stop altogether are all named as indicators, and given the severity of the associated conditions, Pena advises observers to take such signs seriously.

These conditions range from schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder to bipolar disorder and depression - with Pena mentioning brain injury as another possible factor. Such conditions are surprisingly common; the World Health Organization (WHO) puts schizophrenia rates alone at around 23 million people across the globe, while the National Comorbidity Survey Replication suggests that nearly 3% of US adults had bipolar disorder in the last 12 months.

Yet, since the specific causes and drivers behind disorganized thinking vary so widely from person to person, Pena emphasizes Mission Connection’s role in identifying what’s actually triggering an individual's symptoms before building a treatment plan. Diagnostic steps allow its clinicians to address the specific factors at play - whether stemming from a mood disorder, a psychotic issue, or another underlying condition discussed in its resource.
