San Francisco has set its own targets for reducing that kind of disposal. Under a pledge adopted in 2018, the city aims to reduce municipal solid waste generation by 15 percent and cut disposal to landfill and incineration by 50 percent by 2030, according to SF Environment.
Rather than going directly to disposal, loads collected in Dogpatch are taken to a local Junk King warehouse for sorting. Usable items are donated or reused where possible, and materials such as metal and electronics are recycled, with an emphasis on sustainability and eco-friendly disposal practices.
"Much of what people want gone from their homes still has value, whether it's a dresser another family can use or metal that can be recycled," said Michelle Chin, owner of Junk King San Francisco. "Our San Francisco team knows Dogpatch has a lot of residents in newer multi-unit buildings, where getting a couch or a refrigerator down to the street is a real challenge. Adding the neighborhood means those households can clear out large, bulky items and know where they're headed."
