Beacon Design Collective Founder Dani Vachon Sets Out Why the Gap Between What a Nonprofit Intends to Communicate and What Its Audience Actually Receives Is Wider Than Most Organizations Realize

Nov 5, 2026

Drawing on Beacon's seven-stage process from Understanding and Discovery through to Measurement and Optimization, Dani Vachon sets out why the communication gap inside most nonprofits is a structural problem rather than an executional one, and why closing it requires a different kind of process.

-- Dani Vachon, founder and CEO of The Beacon Design Collective Inc., an award-winning, carbon-negative creative studio based in Vancouver, British Columbia, has set out her perspective on what she describes as the communication gap inside most nonprofit organizations: the distance between what an organization intends to communicate and what the audiences it is trying to reach actually understand.

Vachon's position, developed through more than a decade of brand strategy and communication design work with nonprofits, Indigenous organizations, and government agencies across Canada and internationally, is that this gap is almost never the result of poor creative execution. It is the result of a process that begins with what the organization wants to say rather than with what the audience needs to understand.

"The question that changes everything is not what do we want to communicate," Vachon says. "It is what does this specific audience currently understand, what do they need to understand in order to act, and what is standing between those two things. That question produces completely different work."

Why the Gap Is Structural Rather Than Executional

In Vachon's assessment, the communication gap inside most nonprofits is embedded in how the communication process is structured rather than in how well individual pieces of communication are executed. When the process begins with the organization's message and works outward toward the audience, the communication that results is accurate and well-intentioned but designed from the inside rather than for the outside.

When the process begins with a genuine understanding of the audience, including what they currently know, what they believe, what barriers exist between their current understanding and the action the organization needs them to take, the communication that results is designed to work rather than designed to be produced.

Beacon's seven-stage process, moving from Understanding and Discovery through Brand and Foundation Assessment, Research, Strategy, Planning, Delivery, and Measurement and Optimization, is built around this principle at every stage. The discovery work that happens before any creative decisions are made is not a preliminary step. It is the foundation on which every subsequent decision depends.
